A Political Lesson to take to Heart

For all of the organizations that are agreeing to support (or in some cases simply not oppose) legislation simply because they have been exempted from it, perhaps it’s best to remember these words:

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out —
because I was not a communist;

Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out —
because I was not a socialist;

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out —
because I was not a trade unionist;

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out —
because I was not a Jew;

Then they came for me —
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

– variation of First They Came, attributed to Martin Niemoller

We need to speak out in the interest of our entire country, and not just choose to ignore legislation simply because it does not “effect us.”  Because in the end, it will.
