Why GirlsWhoCode is Important
So much of what these young ladies are saying about programming is exactly how I feel about it! Their excitement and the passion is what will drive us into the future – people who think outside the box, are dedicated, and love what they’re doing.
But so many do not have the opportunity, even to learn about their passion. GirlsWhoCode isn’t just about balancing gender in technology, but about giving passionate and dedicated women, tomorrow’s leaders, the chance to grow their skills and give back to the world in ways still unimaginable. It’s about making a difference in the lives of those who have the potential to exponentially repay the favor and make a difference in so many other’s lives.
This is a great organization, and one I would highly recommend getting involved with, or donating. You can see the passion in their faces, and you can see the inspiration that they can bring with them. Help them, help the world.
On side note, a shoutout to my hometown, Bemidji MN in the video below:
To give you an idea of what makes this particular chapter so special (other than being where I grew up), is that Bemidji, MN is located up in Northern Minnesota – 4 hours from the closest major city – Minneapolis. Instead, the biggest hub in the area, Bemidji, has a whopping population of just 14,000.
In Bemidji the jokes run about lumberjacks (my high school mascot – with Paul and Babe being one of the main landmarks of the city), and technology really isn’t on the forefront of people’s minds (although Paul Bunyan Telephone – now Paul Bunyan Communications has done some amazing things for the area). Yet, despite not being San Francisco, where you can’t walk without meeting a developer – this Northern Minnesota group has an impressive 50 MEMBERS!!! That’s 50 young women who would not otherwise likely have the opportunity to learn about programming!!! That’s what makes this organization so special, and so amazing – that it can reach beyond both gender, cultural, and even geographical boundries – touching those and enabling those who again are bound to make a difference.
I’d like to think that at least one ok programmer has come out of Bemidji, MN so far – I’m excited to see how many more, far better ones come out of this program!!!
